      Formerly called manic-depressive disorder, Bipolar Disorder (BPD) is a brain disorder characterized by shifting highs and lows in mood, energy, activity level, and daily functioning. A shift in polarity between manic and depressive symptoms is characteristic of BPD; thus, the name ‘bipolar’.
